Digital radiography utilizes computer technology and digital sensors for the acquisition, viewing, storage, and sharing of radiographic images. It offers several advantages over the older traditional film based methods of taking x-rays. The most significant of these advantages is that digital radiography reduces a patient’s exposure to radiation. Other benefits are that images can be viewed instantly after being taken, can be seen simultaneously as needed by multiple practitioners, and can be easily shared with other offices. Digital x-rays are also safer for the environment as they do not require any chemicals or paper to develop.
An electronic pad, known as a sensor is used instead of film to acquire a digital image. After the image is taken, it goes directly into the patient’s file on the computer. Once it is stored on the computer, it can be easily viewed on a screen, shared, or printed out.
Every patient is different, and so is their X-ray schedule. Rather than following a routine, one-size-fits-all timetable, we follow the ADA's updated 2026 imaging guidelines and the ALARA principle — "As Low As Reasonably Achievable." That means we review your dental and medical history, prior images, and current exam findings before recommending any X-ray, and we only order imaging when it will meaningfully guide your diagnosis or treatment. For some patients that means X-rays every year; for others, less frequently.

Digital radiography already uses a fraction of the radiation of traditional film X-rays. In keeping with updated national safety recommendations, our office has also moved away from routine lead apron and thyroid collar shielding, reflecting current research showing today's digital sensors and collimation techniques keep exposure low enough that additional shielding is no longer necessary for most patients. We stay current with ADA and FDA guidance so you can feel confident every image we take is both necessary and as low-dose as possible.
